What is an SSRO? An SSRO is a security school resource officer which is similar to an SRO (school resource officer). The difference is the SSRO is a licensed level III DPS commissioned security officer and an SRO is a TCOLE licensed peace officer.
In 2023 Texas lawmakers passed a law requiring an armed person to be on every school campus during regular school hours. The law allows the following armed people to be on a campus law enforcement, level III commissioned security officer, School Guardians and marshals who are school staff members.
The law also allows school districts to obtain their own security license which enables districts to hire district staff to be level III armed officers. The law also requires the school to have a licensed qualified manager, which we can provide.
Level III commissioned security officers are required to have additional training above the 45 hours required for Level III officers. Our class provides an additional 40 hours of training. Students must have their LTC to work in a school and to take this class.
Our SSRO training program was created by Jeff Sellers of Schools On Target who also created the Texas School Guardian Program in 2009. Schools On Target is a licensed training school through Texas DPS.
